Abandoned Bourke Abattoir
Built in the 1940’s, this long-abandoned facility provided meat to much of the state as well as employment to the local community. Ceasing permanently in the 90’s, this now dilapidated slaughterhouse contains the conveyer belts, stock rooms and chillers left behind from more productive days.
Located on the outskirts of the infamous Bourke township, the area is the traditional home of the Ngemba people. Waterlogged, rust-filled and filled with insects, the former meat-works bakes in the sun on its arid roadside landscape.
