Varosha

Once a glamorous Mediterranean resort town lined with luxury hotels and pristine beaches, Varosha, was left abandoned after the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.  Responding to a Greek-backed coup, the Turkish military sealed the area, creating what is now, a vast ghost town left untouched for five decades.

Photographs of Varosha’s abandoned buildings tell the story of its sudden evacuation and prolonged isolation. Crumbling hotels and shops reflect the abrupt halt of daily life. Nature has reclaimed the area and the remaining structures symbolising lost prosperity, political division, and the passage of time in a place where history remains suspended.
