Abandoned theme parks are always fun to check out (more so than visiting active theme parks).   

Built in 1975 and with a North American western colonial theme, its doors were closed forever in 2007 (due to lack of public interest).  It now sits abandoned, derelict and rotting away on the edge of a small rural town.

The Kappa Onsen Hotel in Nikko (a beautiful Japanese mountain area) stands on the edge of a cliff overlooking a gushing river.   I'm unsure how long this place has been abandoned...but judging by the old telephones and furnishings, I'm assuming early 90's.   The building is kind of eerie and looks dead when viewed from the foot bridge which links one side of Nikko to the other.

The Ashio Mine became industrialised in 1871 and produced approx 39 percent of Japans copper up until its closure in 1973.  It caused a lot of environmental controversy in the later part of the 19th century as a result of floods and pollution.  But it now sits sleepy and hidden away in the mountains (Tochigi Prefecture)
